"Welcome to Thoothukudi District"

The new Thoothukudi District was formed in 1986 after being bifurcated from the erstwhile Tirunelveli District. Thoothukudi District is located in the south-eastern region of Tamil Nadu. It is bounded by Tirunelveli District to the west, Tenkasi District to the north-west, Virudhunagar District to the north, Ramanathapuram District to the north-east, and the Gulf of Mannar to the east and south. The total geographical area of the district is approximately 4,745.97 sq. kms. It comprises 10 Taluks, 4 Municipalities, 19 Town Panchayats, 403 Revenue Villages, and 408 Village Panchayats.

The Tamirabarani River flows through parts of the district before emptying into the Gulf of Mannar near Punnaikayal. Thoothukudi is widely known as the "Pearl City" due to its historic pearl fishing industry and maritime heritage. The district is home to Thoothukudi Port, one of India's major seaports, playing a vital role in international trade and economic development. The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, coral reefs, and rare aquatic species, is also located along the district's coastline. Thoothukudi is the birthplace of the freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, who is celebrated for launching India's first indigenous shipping company during the freedom movement.
